Braces provide more space for plaque and food debris to hide, so it's even more important to choose a specially designed toothbrush to clean cracks and crevices that braces create.
If you have trouble cleaning areas near brackets and wires, some special tools can help you. One is the interdentally toothbrush, or proxabrush. it has a small tuft of hair standing around like a pipe cleaner. Use it gently and carefully to clean the tiny spaces under the wires and around the strips and brackets.
Another special cleaning tool is the mouth irrigator or "water peak”. This device pulls a small jet of water under pressure on your teeth, which can help dislodge pieces of food that get stuck in corners and nooks. Although it is easy to use, an oral irrigator is not a substitute for a toothbrush or dental floss - but when used with brushing and flossing techniques, it can to be very effective. And an electric toothbrush with a circular ortho brush is designed to clean around braces gently but effectively.
